When I was preparing for the Australian citizenship test, I wanted a simple way to practise on my phone. Something I could open for a few questions, understand where I went wrong, and return to later without working around ads or a subscription.
So I built Pass Citizenship Test, my free Australian citizenship test practice app for iPhone and Android. It includes 421 practice questions, explanations with official source references, and offline mock exams. Every study feature is free, with no ads, subscriptions or in-app purchases.
Why I built an Australian citizenship study app
The apps I tried while studying often left me frustrated: ads interrupted the flow, interfaces felt dated, and answering questions could become an exercise in remembering which option to tap. I wanted explanations that helped me understand the material.
I also wanted to build and publish a mobile app. Although I work in software engineering, I had never used Flutter or written Dart before this project. Preparing for my own citizenship test gave me a practical problem to work on, and a reason to care about the details.
The result is the study app I wanted to use: open it, practise, read the explanation, and keep going.
What you can practise in the app
421 questions across the four test categories
You can focus on one category or mix categories together. The question bank covers the four testable parts of Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond:
- Australia and its people.
- Australia’s democratic beliefs, rights and liberties.
- Government and the law in Australia.
- Australian values.
These are practice questions based on the resource booklet, not the actual questions from your citizenship test.
Explanations and source references
After answering, you get feedback with an explanation and a reference to the official material. If a topic is unfamiliar, you can connect the answer back to what you have read instead of simply trying the question again until it looks familiar.
Mock exams with the Australian values requirement
The app includes timed and untimed mock exams. Timed practice helps you get used to completing a full set of questions; untimed practice gives you space to work through them at your own pace.
For the standard citizenship test, Home Affairs specifies 20 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes. You need at least 15 correct answers overall and all five Australian values answers correct. The app’s mock exams check both scoring requirements. See the official citizenship test guidance for the current rules.
That distinction matters: a high overall score does not make up for an incorrect Australian values answer.
Starred questions, progress and exam history
Star questions you want to revisit, track your practice progress, and review previous exam attempts. These give you somewhere useful to start your next session, particularly when you want to return to a topic you found difficult.
Free, offline and without an account
Once installed, the app’s core study features work without an internet connection. You can practise during a train journey, in a waiting room, or whenever you have a few spare minutes. Opening external resources or downloading app updates still requires internet access.
There is no sign-up, and your study progress stays on your device. The app does not collect, transmit or sell your data. There is no paid tier to unlock: questions, explanations, mock exams and progress tools are all available for free.
Where it fits into your test preparation
Start with the official booklet. Home Affairs says Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond contains the material you need to prepare, and also provides a free official practice test. You can find both through its citizenship test preparation page.
If you would like additional practice on your phone, the app gives you a way to work through questions by topic, read explanations, revisit starred questions and try a mock exam. Use what you find difficult as a prompt to return to the relevant part of the booklet.
Pass Citizenship Test is an independent, unofficial study aid. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Australian Government, and practice results do not guarantee a pass. Check important details against current Home Affairs resources.
From my first Flutter project to both app stores
I built the app with Flutter and Dart, using AI tools throughout the work. I had been interested in trying an AI-assisted development process on a real project, and this took it through the full journey: planning, architecture, implementation, debugging on physical devices, app signing and store submission.
Getting it onto phones involved much more than making the first screens work. I reviewed the question bank, worked through device issues, and learned how App Store Connect and Google Play Console fit into releasing an app.
Seeing something I had built become available on both platforms was satisfying. But the purpose stayed practical: make a useful study tool available to someone preparing for the same test I was.
